On May 14, 2015, the Sandy Oaks City Council created property tax exemptions for senior citizens and those disabled.
The Council had previously discussed these tax exemptions on March 21, 2015. At that meeting the City Attorney, Art Martinez de Vara, suggested to the Council that they hold a workshop with a representative from Bexar County.
Mayor Jim Clement told the Council that a man named Jesse Gutierrez from the Bexar County Tax Assessor Collector’s office was interested in coming to speak with the Sandy Oaks City Council. (Not to be confused with the City Marshal applicant Jesse Gutierrez.)
Alderman Micki Ball acted on Martinez de Vara’s advice and motioned to have the Mayor create a workshop and invite Gutierrez.
The workshop never happened.
Clement scheduled a Tax Hearing for May 11, 2015, and listed a Carlos Gutierrez as a guest on the meeting’s agenda but cancelled the meeting. Clement claimed he had to cancel because he was legally required to announce the Tax Hearing in the newspaper and hadn’t.
The City Council didn’t address the topic of tax exemptions until May 14, 2015.
At the May 14, 2015 meeting the City Council created property tax exemptions.
A homestead exemption was set at 10%.
The Council also set an exemption of $3,000 for those who are either disabled or are 65 years and older.
State law requires that disabled military veterans receive a property tax exemption.
