Sandy Oaks Mayor Jim Clement stood outside Freedom Elementary School on election day November 4, 2014. The school served as the only polling location for citizens of the newly formed City of Sandy Oaks.
The only items on the ballot specifically pertaining to the city were 4 propositions that dealt with sales taxes. The first 3 were about new city sales taxes and the 4rth was about the VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Clement greeted soon-to-be voters in an attempt to get them to vote in favor of the sales tax propositions and against keeping VIA.
The audio recording below shows that Mayor Jim Clement lied to voters about sales taxes.
Mayor Clement was asked why he led the City Council in the decision to create new sales taxes. His response was that the sales tax already existed. He also stated the county collects sales tax and that the current sales tax in Sandy Oaks is already 8 cents (per dollar).
However, Bexar county does not collect sales taxes, and the vote was for adding additional taxes to the already existing state sales tax paid in the City of Sandy Oaks.
One of the new taxes passed with 51% of the votes in favor.
It would only have taken the convincing of 4 people for the vote to pass in favor.
Mayor Clement was at the polling location for multiple hours.
