The audio below is the 4rth part of a 4 part conversation with Sandy Oaks Mayor Jim Clement outside of Freedom Elementary on November 4, 2014. The school served as the only polling location for citizens of the City of Sandy Oaks for the November election. Clement met voters to convince them to vote in favor of 3 new sales taxes he wanted.
The main question asked of Clement was why he wanted to create a new set of sales taxes when the City of Sandy Oaks has less than 4 businesses and any business outside the city limits would be able to operate at a lower cost and be more competitive. Mayor Clement responded:
In that respect I don’t think that would be the case…because the sales tax, as far as a business is concerned, and you start talking about, if we’re gonna have 8% sales tax, so, uh, instead of having 8 cents we raise it to 8 and a quarter… folks have to spend more, but we’ll get more, if nothing more we’re gonna get it back.
Clement explained that he meant the state would give back the amount raised in sales taxes to the city. When it was pointed out to Clement that the sales tax money was originally an individual’s money, Clement replied:
I don’t look at it the same way. It’s your money, it’s my money, and anything that is in the city treasury is OUR money.
