Dollar General Now Open

At the corner of Priest and Mathis, the newly built Dollar General opened at 7:30pm July 15, 2015.

The convenience store is the first business to move to the area since Mr W Fireworks moved in a stand in the summer of 2014.

Salina Morales, the temporary general manager of the store, told Sandy Oaks News “The first day it was crazy, everybody was coming in.  Even that morning that we weren’t open yet we had so many customers coming in and knocking at the door, wondering when we were going to open. …It was jam-packed.”

She also added that on its first day the store made over $4,000 in sales and had up to 75 people come in.

The normal hours of operation for Dollar General are 8am to 10pm, 7 days a week.

For those on food assistance programs, Morales confirmed the store does take Lone Star and Lone Star Cash.  However, she also added that the machine for accepting them is currently down at the moment.

“Since we opened, we have had the problem with EDT not going through.  However, I made a phone call and I have a new pin-pad coming in for one of my registers.” said Morales.

A second register had been fixed, but the store hadn’t been able to test it yet because a customer needing to use a Lone Star Card hadn’t come in to shop yet for the day.

Prices of Goods

Sandy Oaks News took a random sampling of products to show prices:

A 44 pack of Huggies diapers is $8.50.

A 6 pack of Bounty paper towel rolls is $6.

JIF creamy peanut butter is $4.22, and Dollar General’s generic brand “Clover Valley” peanut butter is $2.

What People Are Saying

Outside the store, new shoppers shared their experience.

Deborah from Waco, who was in the area to visit her family, said she likes the prices and convenience of Dollar General. She also added she would rather not have to wait in line at a Walmart.

Raymond Chavez, a resident of Waterwood, said the new store would benefit the community a lot.

Dollar General Is Hiring

Morales said the store is currently hiring and prospective applicants can visit DollarGeneral.com/careers to apply.

“Search our store number, which is 15921.  There should be an application there for either cashier or stocker.  From there, complete the application [online] which will take 30-45 minutes” explained Morales.

The manager admitted the store didn’t have paper applications, but suggested people use a public library if they didn’t have access to internet.
