On November 12, 2015 the City Council agreed to a contract with Tiger Sanitation for 5 years of exclusive rights to provide trash collection service within the City of Sandy Oaks.
The meeting was the first meeting of the new City Council since the general election on November 3rd. It was also the very first City Council meeting BJ Gillespie attended as an Alderman and member of the City Council.
Before she took office, Gillespie had been opposed to the idea of the city contracting with only 1 company. On June 11, 2015 she had addressed the City Council during a Citizens to be Heard segment in which she stated a contract with a single entity would be “messing with free enterprise.”
On September 26, 2015, Gillespie posted the following on a social media account:
When the Council addressed the issue on November 12th, Alderman David Tremblay made a motion to accept the contract. Alderman Gillespie, however, said she had never read the contract because it hadn’t been given to her and wouldn’t agree to anything she hadn’t read.
The Council then took a 10 minute recess so Gillespie could read the contract. When the Council reconvened, Gillespie seconded the motion to approve the contract, then voted in favor of the contract with Tiger Sanitation.
