No Fireworks Over Fireworks

Mayor Jim Clement has been ignoring the issue of fireworks now for 4 months.

In November of 2014, Aldermen David Tremblay and Micki Ball had an agenda item about adopting a required permit for the sell of fireworks.  City Attorney Art Martinez de Vara told them the permit wouldn’t be enforceable because the city didn’t have a City Marshal or a Municipal Court.

At the that November meeting the City Council instructed the City Attorney to draft a resolution that would require permits and to present it at the January 2015 meeting.

January passed with 2 different City Council meetings and neither one of them had an item about the resolution the City Attorney was to create addressing permits to sell fireworks.

The topic didn’t come up again until March 14th.  The City Attorney had the ordinance, but suggested that the Council hold a public hearing and invite public fire protection officials.  At the same meeting, Mayor Clement was instructed to set up an animal control workshop on March 28th.

Instead, Clement set up a public hearing on animal control.

A public hearing on fireworks never happened.  This isn’t surprising considering 2/3 of the City Council are members of the Sandy Oaks Political Action Committee (SOPAC).  Mr W  fireworks was a campaign contributor to SOPAC, which includes Mayor Jim Clement and Aldermen Joel Ortega, Earnest Gay, and Doug Tomasini.

Mr W Fireworks has also been a campaign contributor to the Von Ormy Political Action Committee, a PAC set up by Art Martinez de Vara to help fund his political ambitions.
